We feel very lucky to call Highgate House our home. Dating back to 1631, it's a prominent Grade II listed house of immense character, set within delightful grounds just one mile from the village of Bettws Cedewain, with stunning views over the Highgate Valley.
Over the years, the surrounding barns and buildings have been lovingly renovated into a collection of holiday lets — our two cottages, Orchard and Quarry, and the spacious Highgate Barnhouse — all set within the extensive grounds of Highgate House. Whether you're here to unwind or to explore, they offer the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful Mid Wales countryside, with the whole of Mid Wales and the Marches on your doorstep — and the coast within easy reach.

Orchard Cottage and Quarry CottageHighgate Holiday Cottages are converted from a 19th-century mill barn and stand within the grounds of Highgate House.
Inside, the cottages blend period character with a high-quality, contemporary finish. Original features such as exposed oak beams and timber doors sit alongside stylish, well-equipped kitchens, comfortable living spaces and beautifully appointed bedrooms and bathrooms — all warmed by underfloor heating and finished with the thoughtful little touches that make a stay effortless. Feature windows and patio doors frame the waterside views, drawing the setting inside. The gardens surrounding the cottages are beautifully maintained, with lawned areas, mature trees and well-stocked flower borders. A stroll around the grounds reveals stunning views over the adjoining rolling countryside and the Highgate Valley. To the rear of the cottages lies the delightful mill pond, which provides a wonderful vista from the private balcony terraces of the barns. The pond is stocked with trout and attracts an abundance of wildlife, including otters, throughout the year, while red kites are often seen circling overhead. Highgate Barnhouse spacious group retreat –
Just across the road from the cottages this stylish countryside retreat is set within a 30-acre country estate in the rolling Mid Wales Marches at Bettws Cedewain. Sleeping up to 20 guests across 5 ground-floor en-suite bedrooms, with space for up to 4 dogs, it is ideal for large family gatherings, group countryside breaks, multi-generational stays and relaxed rural escapes, set in a private, completely detached position. With generous social spaces, stylish interiors, a games room, electric lift, wrap-around patio, enclosed paddock and 30 acres of grounds to explore, Highgate Barnhouse provides a comfortable and practical base for larger groups. Guests can also meet the owner’s animals, including alpacas, ponies, pigs and go fishing at the private trout pond. Celebrations and events Highgate Barnhouse enjoys a wonderfully private countryside setting, with no immediate neighbours, making it a great choice for larger group stays, family celebrations and special occasions. The grounds have previously hosted weddings, stag and hen getaways, and team-building trips. When all three properties are booked together, the total occupancy is up to 34 guests. We’ve just returned from the most amazing family weekend away, and I honestly can’t recommend this place highly enough! There were 16 of us in total – 10 adults and 6 children – and the house catered for us perfectly. The five fabulous en-suite bedrooms were beautiful, and the large kitchen table meant we could all sit together for meals, which made the weekend even more special. The lounge was absolutely huge and the perfect place for us all to gather to watch the World Cup together. The kitchen was incredibly well equipped with a phenomenal amount of plates, cups and glasses, and having two dishwashers was an absolute game changer! Two ovens and the BBQ were ideal. The double doors opened straight onto the garden, field where the children spent hours playing football, rounders and other games until late in the evening. There were also lots of activities on site to keep everyone entertained, whatever the weather, and the children loved visiting the animals—they were so cute! We also enjoyed a fantastic Sunday roast at The Bull & Heifer, just a mile away. It’s a bit uphill, so we drove, and it was well worth the short trip. I could go on and on about how wonderful this place is. We genuinely had the best weekend and hardly needed to leave the accommodation because everything we needed was right there. It was the perfect place for making family memories.
