Bettws Cedewain
The picturesque village of Bettws Cedewain is approximately one mile from Highgate. At the centre of the village is the historic Church of St Beuno and the characterful Bull & Heifer country pub. The Bull & Heifer serves freshly prepared food, traditional pub favourites and Sunday lunches. Advance booking is recommended, particularly for larger groups and weekend meals. Newtown The historic market town of Newtown is approximately three miles away and provides supermarkets, independent shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and other everyday amenities. Visitors can explore the town centre, walk beside the River Severn or visit Oriel Davies Gallery, an accessible and family-friendly contemporary art gallery situated beside Newtown’s town park. Newtown is also a useful starting point for walks and cycle rides along the Montgomery Canal and through the surrounding Mid Wales countryside.

Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway Take a journey through the Mid Wales countryside aboard the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. This historic narrow-gauge railway offers scenic steam and heritage diesel train journeys between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion. Operating days and timetables vary throughout the year, and advance booking is advisable during busy periods. Montgomery The attractive town of Montgomery is known for its historic streets, independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Lake Vyrnwy Lake Vyrnwy is surrounded by forests, hills and nature-rich countryside. Visitors can walk, cycle, enjoy scenic viewpoints or spend time exploring the nature reserve. A popular circular cycling route follows the lake, while shorter walks allow visitors to see the dam, distinctive straining tower and surrounding woodland. Refreshments and visitor facilities are available in the area, although opening times should be checked before travelling. Eryri National Park The southern reaches of Eryri National Park, formerly known as Snowdonia, can be reached from Highgate for a longer day out. Activities must normally be arranged in advance, and availability may vary according to group size, age and weather conditions. Clay pigeon shooting Mid Wales has a strong sporting tradition and several established shooting grounds. The Mid Wales Shooting Centre is located within easy reach of Newtown and caters for a range of abilities, from beginners trying clay pigeon shooting for the first time to more experienced competitors.
